Join us in the celebration of Vijaya Dashami, a special day for all students of the arts! This event reflects on the student’s relationship with the guru, study of the arts, and the personal journey from learning to creation.  We will discuss the significance of the occasion and the symbolism of Mother Saraswati. As part of tradition, students offer Guru Dakshina (fruit, flower, etc) to their teacher and perform a few steps of dance to mark a new beginning in their learning journey. Witness live dance up close and personal and enter Chande’s world, where she layers together raw melodic vocals, philosophical prose, and gestural precision. A clear articulation of her modern musings, Chande’s work is rooted in bharatanatyam technique but explores its contemporary application for audiences inside and outside the classical dance world.

Tuesday June 3 // 7:00pm

Saturday June 7 // 9:00am

During these meetings we will be discussing new and important changes to Soham’s children’s program. We will also discuss the unique opportunities Soham offers and the expectations of all parents and students in our school. You will also get to meet your fellow Soham parents and teachers and ask any questions to learn more about our children’s program.
We want to continue to build Soham into a special community and positive environment for creative growth. This meeting will help us all consider how we can achieve this together.
Again, you will NOT be able to enroll your child in our program if you do not attend this meeting! Now is the time to mark it in your calendars and RSVP to one of three dates: May 31, June 3, June 7.  Sign up for your preferred Orientation date HERE.

Aug 12 @ 6:00 pm
Anjal Chande & The Soham Dance Project @ Drive East, NYC @ First Floor Theatre at La MaMa | New York | New York | United States

The Soham Dance Project will perform selections of new works at this weeklong celebration of South Asian music and dance.

“Drive East at La MaMa — accurately subtitled a Journey Through South Asian Music and Dance — is an extraordinary feat, covering more ground than many other festivals. In seven days, it presents 26 performances, none repeated, of music and dance. Six of India’s classical dance forms — Bharata Natyam, Odissi, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Mohiniattam and Kathakali — will be represented. The music includes Carnatic and Hindustani vocals and individual performances devoted to the tabla, sitar, flute and other instruments. Few of us in the West know nearly enough about these rich and compelling genres; I hope this festival recurs in years to come.”

Pay No Mind: Performance by The Soham Dance Project, Sept. 19 @ Links Hall

Pay No Mind: Performance by The Soham Dance Project, Sept. 19 @ Links Hall | Chicago | Illinois | United States

Pay No Mind explores themes of conformity and rebellion through contemporary Indian dance theatre. Three performers take a look at how conformity and rebellion manifest in the most obvious and subtle of ways. The original music score is a product of trans-regional collaboration between composer Anjal Chande, and musicians Jesse Hunter and Karl Olson. The composition was inspired by Chande’s own melodies, combined with her original text, which together provide an unusual backdrop for bharatanatyam dance.
