What is bharatanatyam?
Bharatanatyam is a classical dance form of India that uses geometric movement, rhythmic footwork, codified hand gestures, and subtle facial expressions to create vibrant performances and tell colorful stories. This comprehensive dance form can further explore artistic dimensions, such as music genre, thematic content, choreographic structure, and intended audiences, and it takes on new life with each practitioner.
Soham is a contemporary space for bharatanatyam’s tremendously rich vocabulary of movement and expression in bharatanatyam and lends itself to infinite new applications and an ever-growing repertoire.
What is arangetram?
Arangetram literally means “ascending the stage.” It is considered a debut—the first formal performance for seasoned students to display their basic mastery of the art form through a fulllength evening solo recital lasting about two hours. Children look forward to this milestone; it is commonly reached during their high school years but can happen at any age. While it is meant to mark the beginning of a dancer’s career rather than the end, it is often regarded as a graduation or culmination of their years of training.
Which class is best for my child or me?
We ask our students to contact the instructor to discuss which class would be appropriate. If you have prior dance training or are uncertain which class to enroll in, please inquire further at firstname.lastname@example.org. New students may also be eligible to join another class with the permission of the instructor.
Does my child need to have experience in dance to enroll in a class?
No prior dance training is needed for our Children’s Dance School Year classes or our Children’s Summer Camp Storytelling & Indian Dance. Our Dance Intensive for Teenagers requires instructor approval and at least five years of prior training.
Do I need to have experience in dance to enroll in a class?
Our Bharatanatyam Beginners classes do not require prior dance training, while our Bharatanatyam Intermediate/Advanced classes are geared toward adults who have had previous bharatanatyam instruction.
